How are HDR (High Dynamic Range) Photos Taken?

HDR photos are usually made up of 3 or more of the same photo at different exposures combind digitally to create a hyper-realistic image. These photos must be from the exact same angle in order to create an HDR image.

When you've decided on a good subject for your photo, frame and set your camera like you would for a normal picture. From this setting you will establish the darker and lighter exposures for your HDR. Darker pictures are indicated as -1EV for negative one exposure value from nuetral. Likewise, brighter is indicated as +1 for positive one exposure value. These exposures can be expanded to -2/+2 for scenes with very dark and very bright lights in the same photo.

Three exposures isn't the minimum or the limit for how many photos can be used to create an HDR photo. You can use a single RAW file, or five, seven, nine, or more photos. Each photo added to the group makes it much harder to keep the camera steady between photos, even with the use of a tripod because you must manually change the exposure settings. To help, DSLR's have an automatic multiple exposure setting on the camera, designed to take 3 photos for an HDR wihout adjusting the settings manually. This setting also allows for shooting HDR's hand-held as opposed to using a tripod.
